Homeownership and Safety

Recently, I wrote an article in CBC Hamilton about how people carved “die yuppie” on the sidewalk in front of my house. Clearly, the changes happening in the economy and real estate market in Hamilton, ON are affecting people. Many citizens feel that they are getting displaced and various of them are angry. I’ve heard my close friends talk about the break-ins and vandalism they’ve experienced and it never really phased me because I don’t really have anything worth stealing.

With the hateful graffiti and the recent string of violence targeting new businesses near my house though, I am realizing I should step up the security in my house. Even though I don’t have stuff of value, I have a plan to get more outdoor lighting (like this copper lantern, or this Bronze Fluorescent Outdoor Wall Lantern) and maybe even a safety deposit box. I wouldn’t want to go through the hassle of replacing important documents if they got stolen so a small security box might do the trick!

I am also interested in getting a video security system but I always have a hard time buying technology since I don’t know what to look for. I found this fancy 960p WiFi Security System at Home Depot but I take months to decide on any purchase over $200 because I want to make sure it’s what I need.  I’ve also heard great things about the Nest products since they connect to your phone, but I really don’t know what to look for.

I’d love some help finding the right products. If you have any experience with securing your home or business, please let me know your suggestions 🙂
